Spotlight on Hayao Miyazaki
Billed as Hayao Miyazaki's last film 'The Boy & The Heron' won Best Animated Feature at the 2024 Golden Globes. It's the the first hand-drawn and non-English-language animated film to receive the prize. So in its honour, we thought we'd do a little dive into the creative life of Hayao Miyazaki.
Miyazaki is a renowned Japanese animator, filmmaker, screenwriter, author, and co-founder of Studio Ghibli, one of the most celebrated animation studios in the world. Born on January 5, 1941, in Bunkyo, Tokyo, Japan, Miyazaki's career has spanned several decades, leaving an indelible mark on the global animation industry.
Miyazaki's passion for art and storytelling was evident from a young age. His father owned an airplane parts manufacturing company, which influenced Hayao's fascination with aviation—a recurring theme in many of his later works. His early exposure to animation, particularly the works of Osamu Tezuka, also played a crucial role in shaping his artistic aspirations.
After studying political science and economics, Miyazaki joined Toei Animation in 1963.
